Nordholm-Carstensen A, et al. - Comparison of Anastomotic leak rates following stapled vs handsewn ileocolic anastomosis was done in this nationwide, retrospective cohort study. Using the Danish Colorectal Cancer Group and National Patient Registry databases, researchers included 1414 patients; 391 (28%) in the stapled group and 1023 (72%) in the handsewn group. Anastomotic leak was 2-fold higher after stapled vs handsewn ileocolic anastomoses. They recommend scrutinizing previous opinions on the optimal anastomosis technique for colon cancer in view of the devastating short-term outcome of anastomotic leak.
