Increased intake of fast acting carbohydrates in patients with Parkinson disease

Schäffer E, Schermann A, Zirbs F, et al. - The hypothesis of an increased consumption of fast-acting carbohydrates in Parkinson disease (PD) was put to test and findings corroborated alterations in intake of fast acting carbohydrates derived from sweets in PD.
An elevated desire for food or beverages with high sugar content is regularly present in patients with PD.
A total of 221 PD patients were compared with 184 healthy controls, applying a self-administered questionnaire, in terms of intake of high sugar-content food products.
Significant more often a high intake of chocolate and other sweets was reported by male PD patients vs healthy controls.
Moreover, a significant longer disease duration was evident in relation to a high consumption of these products in PD patients.
