Increased intake of fast acting carbohydrates in patients with Parkinson disease

Schäffer E, Schermann A, Zirbs F, et al. - The hypothesis of an increased consumption of fast-acting carbohydrates in Parkinson disease (PD) was put to test and findings corroborated alterations in intake of fast acting carbohydrates derived from sweets in PD.

  • An elevated desire for food or beverages with high sugar content is regularly present in patients with PD.

  • A total of 221 PD patients were compared with 184 healthy controls, applying a self-administered questionnaire, in terms of intake of high sugar-content food products.

  • Significant more often a high intake of chocolate and other sweets was reported by male PD patients vs healthy controls.

  • Moreover, a significant longer disease duration was evident in relation to a high consumption of these products in PD patients.
