Increased incidental thyroid cancer in patients with subclinical chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis
Journal of Surgical Research Dec 14, 2019
Jackson D, et al. - Patients with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (CLT) were compared with non-CLT patients regarding the malignancy rate following thyroidectomy. Following a retrospective review of prospectively collected data of 1,268 patients with index thyroid nodules undergoing thyroidectomy at a single institution, researchers included 359 patients in this work; CLT was reported in 52 of these. The analysis revealed a 1.5-fold higher risk of incidental papillary thyroid carcinoma among patients with CLT. They recommend considering CLT as a risk factor for incidental thyroid cancer, and counseling patients with this thyroid condition and monitoring them periodically for underlying thyroid malignancy.
