Increased expression of SOX2 predicts a poor prognosis and promotes malignant phenotypes in upper tract urothelial carcinoma
Cancer Management and Research Nov 05, 2019
Bao Z, Zhan Y, He S, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the expression of SRY-related HMG-box 2 (SOX2) in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) as well as its predictive value for prognosis and effect on tumor aggressiveness. Using immunohistochemistry, they analyzed SOX2 expression in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks containing samples from 341 patients with UTUC who underwent radical nephroureterectomy. UTUC tissue samples exhibited significantly upregulated SOX2 expression compared with paired-adjacent nontumorous tissue samples. Findings suggest a correlation of SOX2 expression with important clinicopathological features, including tumor stage, tumor grade, tumor architecture and the presence of glandular or sarcoma differentiation and indicate its value as an independent predictor of poor disease-free survival and cancer-specific survival. Furthermore, the data suggest the possible value of SOX2 as a promising therapeutic target in UTUC.
