Increased Moraxella and Streptococcus following severe bronchiolitis is associated with recurrent wheezing
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Nov 22, 2019
Mansbach JM, Luna PN, Shaw CA, et al. - Since there exists uncertainty regarding the role of the airway microbiome in the development of recurrent wheezing and asthma, especially in the high-risk group of infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis, researchers performed this inquiry with infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis in 17 US centers, to determine the link of nasal microbiota at bronchiolitis hospitalization and 3 later points to the risk of recurrent wheezing by age 3 years. Among 842 participants, there was 88% follow-up at 3 years and the development of recurrent wheezing was reported in 31%. At enrollment, the median age of the participants was 3.2 months. Findings revealed recurrent wheezing by age 3 years in relation to the enrichment of Moraxella or Streptococcus following bronchiolitis hospitalization. A higher risk of recurrent wheezing was also observed in relation to increased Streptococcus the summer following hospitalization.
