Increased circulating chemerin in patients with advanced carotid stenosis
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Apr 20, 2018
Kammerer A, et al. - Whether circulating chemerin, an adipokine which plays a critical role in atherosclerosis, is higher in patients with advanced carotid stenosis, was investigated. Increased circulating chemerin was seen in patients with advanced carotid stenosis, and it correlates to inflammatory parameters. No difference was seen in chemerin levels between asymptomatic and symptomatic patients who had an ischemic event within the 6 months prior to carotid end arterectomy. Still, relative to asymptomatic patients, symptomatic patients had higher chemerin levels in the case of high-grade carotid stenosis (≥ 90%). Increased levels were seen in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) vs patients without. CAD risk is increased by elevated levels of chemerin.
