Increased blood pressure is associated with increased carotid artery intima–media thickness in children with repaired coarctation of the aorta
Journal of Hypertension Jul 03, 2019
Dempsey AA, et al. - In paediatric patients with obesity and children with repaired coarctation of the aorta (CoA), researchers determined which anthropomorphic and haemodynamic variables were significantly correlated with the carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). For this investigation, cIMT was measured in 143 children aged 5 to less than 18 years including normal weight controls (n = 44), children with overweight/obesity (n = 73) and children with repaired CoA (n = 26). According to results, cIMT was positively linked to BMI z score, male sex and CoA repair in children. The increased cIMT in children with repaired CoA was due to those with abnormally high BP, which for most of these patients was clinically masked. There was no significant increase in cIMT in CoA patients with normal BP. These results justify further investigations into the cIMT and other risk factors for atherosclerosis to determine their prospective clinical effect in these extremely vulnerable patients.
