Increased β-cell responsivity independent of insulin sensitivity in healthy African American adults
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Jun 08, 2020
Armiyaw L, Sarcone C, Fosam A, et al. - Experts aspired to explore whether nondiabetic African American (AA) adults have a higher β-cell glucose responsivity compared with non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs). Healthy nondiabetic AA (n = 18) and NHW (n = 18) individuals have been prospectively recruited. In AAs and NHWs, glucose disposal rate during clamp was similar. Regardless of insulin sensitivity, AAs demonstrated significantly higher first-phase and total β-cell responsivity than NHWs. The authors believe that this disparity indicates increased β-cell responsivity specifically to insulin secretion that is readily releasable in the first phase. Future studies are warranted for identifying mechanisms in AAs that lead to primary β-cell hypersensitivity.
