Increased 1-year mortality in hemodialysis patients with COVID-19: A prospective, observational study
Clinical Kidney Journal Dec 26, 2021
Carriazo S, Mas-Fontao S, Seghers C, et al. - Among comorbidities predisposing to severe COVID-19, dialysis was linked with the highest risk of COVID-19 death. Researchers herein investigated hemodialysis patients that were infected by SARS-CoV-2 during the first pandemic wave with the aim to describe the long-term (1 year follow-up) serological and clinical outcomes in these patients.
In this prospective, observational study, 56 hemodialysis patients infected by SARS-COV-2 during the first pandemic wave were studied.
Death was recorded for 35.7% of these hemodialysis patients.
Overall hemodialysis patients with COVID-19 exhibited high mortality that did not limit to the initial hospitalization.
The burden of COVID-19 may be better represented by defining COVID-19 deaths as those occurring within 3 months of a COVID-19 diagnosis.
Observations revealed suboptimal and short-lived anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG response in hemodialysis patients.
