Increase in diagnosis of depressive disorders contributes to the increase in antidepressant use in adolescents
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Apr 11, 2018
Skurtveit S, et al. - Whether or not the observed increase in use of antidepressants (AD) among adolescents could be explained by higher incidence of depressive disorder diagnosis, increasing treatment of other mental disorders or more liberal prescribing practice. Both primary and secondary healthcare showed an increasing incidence of depressive disorders from 2010 to 2015, especially in girls. Increasing AD use in girls was observed to be due to the increasing incidence of depressive disorders. Most of the adolescents with incident diagnosis of depressive disorders were not observed to be treated with ADs.
