Increase in arterial stiffness measures after bariatric surgery
Atherosclerosis Jan 21, 2021
Wang FM, Yang C, Tanaka H, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to explore post-bariatric surgery changes in arterial stiffness and identify factors correlated with greater changes in arterial stiffness. Two arterial stiffness measures, cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and heart-ankle pulse wave velocity (haPWV), one month prior to and 6 months after bariatric surgery, were assessed in 72 patients (mean age 44.5 years, 72.2% female). Another follow-up visit was carried out 12 months after bariatric surgery in a subset of 58 candidates. Despite other beneficial cardiometabolic changes, arterial stiffness measures, CAVI and haPWV, were raised after bariatric surgery.
