Incidental thyroid papillary microcarcinoma: Survival and follow-up
The Laryngoscope Jun 21, 2019
Gorostis S, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to analyze the survival of incidental thyroid papillary microcarcinoma patients treated with surgery for benign thyroid disease with the aim of validating the absence of oncological follow-up and reducing unnecessary health costs. Two hundred fifty-two of the 1,554 patients were chosen because during the pathological examination they had incidentally found a papillary microcarcinoma. For these 252 patients, a telephone survey was developed and used. Compared to the general population at the same age, patients with incidental intrathyroid papillary microcarcinoma treated with partial or total thyroidectomy without additional treatment by iodine-131 have identical survival. These data strengthen current recommendations for fewer interventions and less invasive management. They validate the lack of oncological follow-up and maintain patients' quality of life a priority and limit unnecessary expenses of healthcare.
