Incident fracture is associated with a period of accelerated loss of hip BMD: The Study of Osteoporotic Fractures

Osteoporosis International Jul 17, 2018

Christiansen BA, et al. - Authors gauged whether or not incident fractures, including those distant to the hip, are associated with accelerated loss of hip bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly women. The risk of future fractures at all skeletal sites could be increased by the systemic bone loss following fracture. Improved understanding of mechanisms leading to apparent accelerated bone loss following a fracture is required to reduce the subsequent fracture risk. The number of days from fracture to follow up DXA did not affect the loss of total hip BMD.
