Incidence, risk factors, and sequelae of post-kidney transplant delirium
Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Apr 27, 2018
Haugen CE, et al. - Researchers determined the incidence, risk factors, and sequelae of post-kidney transplant (KT) delirium, using national registry claims and a validated chart abstraction algorithm. Using adjusted logistic regression (length of stay ≥2 weeks and institutional discharge [skilled nursing or rehabilitation facility]) and adjusted Cox regression (death-censored graft loss and mortality), they determined delirium sequelae. Only 0.8% of KT recipients had a delirium claim. With age and frailty, increase in the delirium incidence was noted. Post-KT delirium was identified as a strong risk factor for subsequent adverse outcomes. This is a clinical entity that is often missed.
