Incidence, risk factors, and prevention strategies for venous thromboembolism after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy
Annals of Surgical Oncology May 11, 2019
Khan S, et al. - Via conducting this retrospective study of cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) procedures performed from 8/2007 to 11/2017 at their institution, researchers delineated the incidence, risk factors, and pharmacothromboprophylaxis strategies for venous thromboembolism (VTE) after CRS/HIPEC. Among 447 CRS/HIPEC procedures, 25 60-day VTEs (5.6%) were identified, indicating their relatively common occurrence after CRS/HIPEC. VTEs were noted to be associated with high Caprini scores, low serum albumin levels, and additional inpatient comorbidities. Longer length of stay and higher mortality rate were evident with VTE occurrence. For reduced VTE rate, they recommend compliance with current guidelines for extended postoperative thromboprophylaxis.
