Incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of transition of acute kidney injury to chronic kidney disease in cirrhosis: A prospective cohort study
Hepatology Jul 20, 2019
Maiwall R, et al. - Via performing a competing risk analysis, researchers studied the incidence and risk factors for the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with cirrhosis. Of 818 cirrhosis patients (age 50.4 ± 11.8 years), 36% had acute kidney injury (AKI) at enrollment, 27% had prior AKI, and 61% developed new episodes of AKI during the follow-up period. According to findings, nearly two-thirds of cirrhosis patients develop AKI episodes and glomerular filtration rate reduction; the third progress to CKD leading to adverse results. In patients with cirrhosis, higher Model for End-Stage Liver Disease and CysC levels and the number of AKI episodes anticipate the development of CKD.
