Incidence, risk factors and outcomes of cancer in systemic sclerosis
Arthritis Care & Research Oct 30, 2019
Morrisroe K, Hansen D, Huq M, et al. - Researchers conducted this investigation to measure the burden of cancer in systemic sclerosis (SSc). An SSc cohort of 1,727 was enlisted. According to results, breast, melanoma, hematological and lung were the most prevalent cancers. RNAP III antibody was related to a heightened risk of cancer, diagnosed within five years of SSc disease onset. Calcium channel blockers were linked to a greater risk of overall cancer, breast cancer, and melanoma. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) had a correlation with lung cancer. In comparison with SSc patients without cancer, incident SSc cancer patients had more than twofold elevated mortality. The authors discovered that SSc bears an elevated risk of developing cancer, especially lung cancer correlated with ILD, and breast cancer and melanoma transpiring close to SSc disease onset in relation to RNAP III antibodies. SSc cancer patients had higher mortality and increased healthcare costs compared with those without cancer, with an annual surplus of AUD$1,496 per patient cost.
