Incidence, risk factors and outcomes among children with acute flaccid myelitis: A population-based cohort study in a California health network between 2011 and 2016
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Apr 19, 2019
Kane MS, et al. - Among children 1-18 years in the Kaiser Permanente Northern California population, authors conducted a retrospective cohort study to estimate acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) incidence, risk factors and outcomes in a fixed population. They noted an incline in the incidence from 0.30 to 1.43 cases per 100,000 person-years between 2011 and 2016, respectively. They observed risk factors like male sex, Asian ancestry, and history of asthma, atopic dermatitis or head injury. They noted that prodromal illness was frequent, while enterovirus was the most common pathogen found.
