JAMA Oct 14, 2021

Dawood FS, Porucznik CA, Veguilla V, et al. - Researchers sought to retrieve data concerning the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection among children vs adults given their relevance in COVID-19 risk communication and prevention strategies, including COVID-19 vaccination policies for children.

  • Enrolled were households with at least 1 child aged 0 to 17 years in selected counties in Utah and New York City, New York.

  • From September 2020 through April 2021, 1,236 individuals in 310 households participated in surveillance.

  • There were similar site-adjusted incidence rates per 1,000 person-weeks by age group: 6.3 for children aged 0 to 4 years, 4.4 for children aged 5 to 11 years, 6.0 for children aged 12 to 17 years, and 5.1 for adults (aged ≥ 18 years).

  • Risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children seemed similar to that in adults.
