Incidence, progression, and risk factors of epiretinal membranes in the elderly
Retina Mar 11, 2021
Morillon C, Le Goff M, Gattoussi S, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for determining the incidence, progression rate, and risk factors for epiretinal membranes (ERMs) in a population of French elderly individuals. Between 2009 and 2010, 735 eyes of 413 participants of the population-based ALIENOR study were involved. Between 2011 and 2017, participants were re-evaluated every 2 years (ie, three follow-up visits). Data reported that the incidence rate of ERMs was 9.42 per 100 eye-years, corresponding to a 5-year cumulative incidence of 37.6%. The prevalence of ERMs in the population was higher than previously reported, owing to the use of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images. After 85 years, incident ERMs were linked to vitreous adhesion at baseline, choroidal thinning, ERM in the contralateral eye, and smoking.
