Incidence, prognostic impact and clinical outcomes of renal impairment in patients with multiple myeloma: A population-based registry
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Dec 11, 2019
Courant M, et al. - Researchers assessed the incidence trends of renal impairment (RI) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients by utilizing a population-based registry including 1,038 newly diagnosed MM in Gironde, France. They also focused on net survival according to factors of interest using Pohar-Perme indicator and excess mortality rate regression. The clinical consequences of 114 cases of MM with RI were also mentioned. Presentation with RI was made by 24.6% of MM patients (12.9% needed haemodialysis) in this population-based study. Patients with RI had a median survival time of 21 months, compared with not reached at 3 years for other patients. Excess mortality risk was observed in relation to age > 73 years, RI, comorbidities and non-use of drugs or autologous stem-cell transplantation. RI was identified as an independent negative prognostic factor in MM in the first 6 months following diagnosis. The strongest markers found to be related to patient survival were renal recovery and haematologic response.
