Incidence, predictors and clinical outcomes of stent thrombosis following percutaneous coronary intervention in contemporary practice
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Dec 09, 2019
Batchelor R, Dinh D, Brennan A, et al. - In a real-world setting, researchers focused on the incidence as well as the results of stent thrombosis (ST), which represents an uncommon but serious complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Using the Victorian Cardiac Outcomes Registry, they acquired data on 41,137 consecutive PCI procedures from 2013 to 2017. Patient features and clinical consequences were defined in definite and probable ST at 30 days. They reported the occurrence of ST in 225 patients (0.55%). In patients with severely decreased left ventricular ejection fraction and in those presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest for their index PCI, a more common incidence of ST was documented. Findings revealed that 1 in 200 PCIs was complicated with ST despite the use of contemporary stents and adjunctive medications. The link of ST with increased mortality at 30 days was also revealed.
