Incidence of sarcoma in patients undergoing hysterectomy for benign indications: A population-based study
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nov 19, 2018
Multinu F, et al. - In view of the associated risks of disseminating malignant cells in the presence of unexpected sarcoma with morcellation (may be required in minimally invasive hysterectomy to remove the uterus), researchers analyzed women undergoing hysterectomy for benign indication in Olmsted County, Minnesota, between 1999 and 2013, to estimate the incidence of sarcoma among them. Women undergoing hysterectomy for benign indication displayed only a low risk for unexpected uterine sarcoma (0.13% or 1 in 752 surgeries), while the risk was higher in women with uterine fibroids (0.39% or 1 in 256 surgeries). Risk factors for sarcoma were peri-post-menopausal women, women with large uteri, and age >45.
