Incidence of permanent hypocalcaemia after total thyroidectomy with or without central neck dissection for thyroid carcinoma: A nationwide claim study
Clinical Endocrinology Jan 20, 2019
Seo GH, et al. - By analyzing data from the nationwide claim database of South Korea, researchers investigated the impact of central neck dissection (CND) and institutional volume on rates of permanent hypocalcemia, the most common and serious complication after total thyroidectomy (TT). From the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database, patient data for those who underwent TT due to thyroid carcinoma from 2007–2013 were obtained. It was noted that the age- and sex-adjusted risk for permanent hypocalcemia in the TT plus CND group was 1.20. Findings revealed that the risk of permanent hypocalcemia was linked with TT plus CND more than TT alone. They suggested that surgeons take into account risk of permanent hypocalcemia when deciding on performing CND.
