Incidence of hypertension among children treated with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) or prednisolone for infantile spasms

Journal of Child Neurology Dec 06, 2019

McGarry L, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective chart review at a single institution to quantify the incidence and short-term sequelae of hypertension in children treated With adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) or prednisolone for infantile spasms. The sample consisted of children 2 months to 2 years old with newly diagnosed infantile spasms treated from 2013 to 2017. During treatment with nonhormonal therapies, no child developed hypertension. The incidence of hypertension was not significantly different between groups of ACTH and prednisolone. In the ACTH and prednisolone groups, the incidence of hypertension was significantly higher relative to the nonhormonal group. Hypertension is a very common side effect of hormonal therapy for infantile spasms, but few have developed long-term hypertension and no cardiomyopathy has been identified. To establish the role of antihypertensive treatment in hormone-related hypertension, further study is needed.
