Incidence of head injury and traumatic brain injury among people with Alzheimer’s disease
Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health Feb 22, 2019
Ilmaniemi S, et al. - In this register-based study, researchers compared the incidence of head injury and traumatic brain injury (TBI) among persons with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) vs those without AD in a nationwide cohort. The included subjects were community-dwellers diagnosed with AD in Finland in 2005–2011. Overall, 67,172 persons with AD remained after excluding those with previous head injuries. A person without AD and previous head injury matched by age, sex and university hospital district were included for each person with AD. HR was calculated using Cox proportional hazard model and competing risk analyses. They noted that compared to those without AD, persons with AD exhibited a 1.34-fold risk of head injuries and 1.49-fold risk of TBIs following accounting for competing risks of death and full adjustment by socioeconomic status, drug use and comorbidities.
