Incidence of faecal occult blood test interval cancers in population-based colorectal cancer screening: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Gut Jan 12, 2019

Wieten E, et al. - Via a search of electronic databases from inception to mid-December 2017, researchers compared interval colorectal cancer (iCRC) incidence following a negative fecal immunochemical test (FIT) or guaiac fecal occult blood test (gFOBT). They obtained and analyzed data from 6,987,825 individuals with a negative test result, among whom 11,932 screen-detected CRCs and 5,548 gFOBT or FIT iCRCs were recorded. They found that age below 60 years and the third screening round were significantly linked to a lower iCRC rate. According to findings, a negative gFOBT result is related to a higher incidence of iCRC vs a negative FIT. Based on the evidence, the investigators supported the use of FIT over gFOBT as CRC screening tool.
