Incidence of dementia after age 90 in a multiracial cohort

Alzheimer's and Dementia Feb 26, 2019

Gilsanz P, et al. - In a multiracial cohort, researchers estimated the incidence of dementia in a diverse sample of oldest-old and examined whether racial/ethnic disparities are possible. Incident dementia diagnoses from January 1, 2010 to September 30, 2015 were taken from medical records for 2,350 members aged ≥90 from an integrated health care system in California in 2010. Investigators found that the rate of dementia incidence among Asians was lowest, followed by white, Latino and black patients. Cox regression and competing risk models estimated that the risk of black dementia was 28% and 36% higher than the risk of white demographic and comorbidity adjustment. They observed that patterns of racial/ethnic dementia in younger older adults continue after 90 years of age, although to a lesser degree.
