Incidence of cardiovascular disease and its associated risk factors in at-risk men and women in the United Arab Emirates: A 9-year retrospective cohort study
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Jun 21, 2019
Al-Shamsi S, et al. - Among United Arab Emirates (UAE) nationals at high cardiovascular risk, researchers estimated cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence over 9 years’ duration, and investigated risk factors related to CVD in this retrospective cohort study. They also determined if the risk factors related to incident CVD were significantly modified by sex. Participants included 977 adults without any history of CVD, with ≥ 1 CVD risk factors. For major CVD, 12.7 per 1,000 person-years was the estimated incidence rate, and among men and women, 16.8 and 9.0 per 1,000 person-years, respectively. Factors related to the risk of major CVD among high-risk UAE nationals who did not have any history of CVD were: high systolic blood pressure, a low estimated glomerular filtration rate, and poorly controlled diabetes. The risk factors that were found to be modifiable and require aggressive management included high total cholesterol-to-high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratios, particularly among females, and smoking among males.
