Incidence of and risk factors for postoperative urinary retention in men after carotid endarterectomy
Journal of Vascular Surgery Jan 24, 2020
Boitano LT, DeBono M, Tanious A, et al. - Researchers investigated the incidence of postoperative urinary retention (POUR) in men after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Further, they sought preventable risk factors for the development of this complication. From 2014 to June 2018, they identified 294 male patients who underwent CEA. Of these, 82 (28.2%) developed POUR. This suggests the common occurrence of POUR in men undergoing CEA. Almost a quarter of those with POUR had a discharge delay or were discharged with a Foley catheter. They identified preoperative Foley catheterization as protective against POUR and recommend considering it in older patients, diabetics, patients with PAD, and those with a history of urinary retention.
