Incidence of and risk factors for perioperative or periprocedural anaphylaxis in the United States from 2005 to 2014
Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Oct 29, 2020
Gonzalez-Estrada A, Carrillo-Martin I, Renew JR, et al. - Researchers investigated the incidence of periprocedural anaphylaxis (PA) in the United States, as well as compared patient characteristics and underlying risk factors, using deidentified data from the nationwide inpatient sample from 2005 to 2014. Among 35,647,347 identified surgeries and procedures, there were 5,458 (0.015%) PA cases. Observations revealed PA incidence of 1 in 6,531 procedures, with a mortality of 1 in 191,652 procedures. Relative to controls, those with PA had worsening outcomes. Increased odds of PA were evident in the age group between 18 and 34 years and in female patients as well as in correlation with undergoing transplant, hematologic, vascular, and cardiac procedures. They observed correlation of several comorbidities with PA including chronic pulmonary disease.
