Incidence of and risk factors for histologically confirmed solid benign tumors among long-term survivors of childhood cancer
JAMA Oncology May 07, 2019
Kok JL, et al. - Researchers performed this record linkage study involving 5,843 Dutch 5-year survivors of childhood cancer to identify the incidence of, and treatment-related risk factors for, histologically confirmed solid benign tumors. After a median follow-up of 22.7 years, benign tumors developed in 9.3% of participants at a median age of 30.0 years; survivors treated with radiotherapy only showed the highest cumulative incidence of benign tumors (16.7%). Nervous system tumors, uterine leiomyoma, and osteochondroma—but not breast fibroadenoma—seemed to be linked to prior local radiotherapy. These findings may allow early diagnosis, have implications in developing organ-specific guidelines that include some benign tumors, and may guide in-depth etiologic studies.
