Incidence, characteristics, and outcomes of myocardial infarction in patients with peripheral artery disease: Insights from the EUCLID trial
JAMA Cardiology Jan 21, 2019
Olivier CB, et al. - In this secondary analysis of the EUCLID trial, researchers assessed the incidence and types of myocardial infarction (MI) in a peripheral artery disease (PAD) population, investigated the factors related to MI, and determine the association of MI with cardiovascular mortality and acute limb ischemia. Participants included 13,885 patients with symptomatic PAD who were randomized to monotherapy with ticagrelor or clopidogrel, with an ankle-brachial index (ABI) of ≤ 0.80 or previous lower extremity revascularization. During a median follow-up of 30 months, the occurrence of an MI was reported in approximately 5% of patients with symptomatic PAD. The most common MI type was type 1 (spontaneous); however, one-third of MIs were type 2 (secondary). An increased risk of cardiovascular death and acute limb ischemia events was observed in association with MI.
