Incidence, characteristics, and outcomes of delirium in patients with noninvasive ventilation: A prospective observational study

BMC Pulmonary Medicine May 14, 2021

Zhang R, Bai L, Han X, et al. - By conducting a prospective observational study, researchers sought to determine the incidence, characteristics, as well as consequences of delirium in noninvasive ventilation (NIV) patients. Enrolled patients were 1,083 overall, of these, 196 (18.1%) developed delirium during NIV intervention. Findings demonstrated increases in poor results (NIV failure, ICU mortality, and hospital mortality) as well as the use of medical resources (duration of NIV, and lengths of stay in the ICU and hospital) both in relation to delirium. Relative to hyperactive delirium, hypoactive and mixed delirium were identified to be related to higher, and much higher, use of medical resources, respectively.
