Incidence and treatment of splanchnic vein thrombosis in patients with acute pancreatitis: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Oct 22, 2021
Anis FS, Adiamah A, Lobo DN, et al. - Findings demonstrate a significant incidence of splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) in patients experiencing acute pancreatitis. Anticoagulants use provided improvement in the odds of recanalization but elevated the risk of hemorrhagic complications without increasing overall mortality in such cases.
In this systematic review and meta‐analysis, a total of 18 eligible studies reporting the incidence and outcomes linked with SVT in patients with acute pancreatitis were analyzed.
Pooled incidence of SVT at first presentation of acute pancreatitis was estimated to be 15%, but was 17% in all studies.
The anticoagulation-treated group was more likely to face recanalization vs the untreated group (odds ratio OR: 0.45).
Treatment with anticoagulation resulted in significantly greater hemorrhagic complications (OR 2.61) without increasing overall mortality (OR 1.57).
For portal hypertension, the overall incidence was 60%.
