Incidence and risk factors for recurrent cardiovascular disease in Middle-Eastern adults: A retrospective study
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Nov 15, 2019
Govender RD, et al. - Among the United Arab Emirates (UAE) nationals, the incidence of and predictors of recurrent cardiovascular disease (CVD) events was determined in this study. Researchers analyzed an outpatient-based patient cohort (n = 216; 167 males, 49 females) with a history of CVD attending Tawam Hospital between April 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008, and observed until July 31, 2018. The link between major CVD risk factors and the risk of CVD recurrence was assessed using univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models. The overall incidence rate of recurrent CVD events and the 8-year cumulative incidence were estimated to be 92.1 per 1000 patient-years and 73.7%, respectively. In females vs males, a 1.96 times higher risk of recurrent CVD events was reported. Older age, female gender, and diabetes mellitus were identified as significant predictors of recurrent CVD events. In the UAE population, improved CVD morbidity and mortality may be achieved via preventive measures, based on international guidelines for CVD management.
