Incidence and risk factors associated with 30-day readmission for alcoholic hepatitis
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 10, 2019
Garg SK, et al. - Using the Nationwide Readmissions Database, researchers determined the incidence rate of 30-day readmission for patients with alcoholic hepatitis (AH) and assessed potential predictors of readmission. In addition, the 20 most frequent reasons for readmission were identified. To identify factors associated with 30-day readmission, they used multivariate survey logistic regression analysis. During the study period, the 30-day readmission rate in patients with AH was high and stable. The most frequent reasons for readmission were AH, alcoholic cirrhosis, and hepatic encephalopathy. In multivariate analysis female sex, leaving against medical advice, higher Charlson comorbidity index, ascites, and history of bariatric surgery were related to earlier readmissions. On the other hand, older age, payer type, and discharge to skilled nursing-facility lessened this risk. Findings suggested that readmission-related factors can be useful in developing consensus-based expert guidelines, treatment algorithms, and policy changes to help lower AH readmission.
