Incidence and relative risk for developing cancers in women with gestational diabetes mellitus: A nationwide cohort study in Taiwan
BMJ Open Feb 27, 2019
Peng YS, et al. - Using data (2000-2013) from The National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, researchers assessed cancer risk in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)—specifically site-specific cancers. They identified patients with a new diagnosis of cancer recorded in the database and assessed risk for 11 major types of cancer. Investigators found that women with GDM had increased risk of cancers, including cancers of nasopharynx, kidney, lung and bronchus, breast, and thyroid gland after adjusting for maternal age at delivery and comorbidities. Overall, they concluded that the risk of developing cancer is higher for women with GDM, so cancer screening in women with GDM is warranted.
