Incidence and patterns of malignancies in a multi-ethnic cohort of rheumatoid arthritis patients
International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Jul 17, 2019
Lim XR, et al. - In this multi-ethnic cohort study, researchers analyzed the incidence and patterns of malignancies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. One thousand one hundred seventeen patients were analyzed in the prospective Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) RA Registry between 2001 and 2013. During the observation period, 132 incident malignancies were diagnosed from 19,839 person-years of follow-up. Findings revealed that there were 114 solid-organ tumors and 18 hematological malignancies. Data reported that the standardized incidence ratio (SIR) for all malignancies combined was 1.28 for males and 1.21 for females. Compared to the general population, there is a trend toward an overall increased risk of malignancy in RA patients. Specifically, all RA patients are at increased risk of lymphomas, lung malignancy in male patients, and cervical malignancy in female patients compared to the general population. It was noted that the SIR of lung malignancy in male RA patients is 2.36 and SIR of cervical malignancy in female RA patients is 3.72.
