Incidence and outcomes of cutaneous angiosarcoma: A SEER Population Based Study
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Jul 18, 2019
Conic RRZ, et al. - In this retrospective, population based study involving 811 patients, researchers analyzed epidemiologic trends and outcomes in cutaneous angiosarcoma (CAS), a rare, malignant tumor of vascular mesenchymal origin accounting for <1% of all sarcomas. From the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results [SEER] database, patients with CAS were identified. Using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models, survival was evaluated. On multivariate analysis, patients >70 years of age had a higher risk of death vs those <50, and distant disease was linked to increased risk of death compared to localized disease. Among those with other prior primary cancers, CAS rates are rising. Current therapeutic strategies do not affect survival, highlighting the need for additional treatment options.
