Incidence and outcomes of acute ischemic stroke following percutaneous coronary interventions in men vs women
The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 20, 2019
Alkhouli M, et al. - Researchers compared men and women who underwent percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), in terms of the incidence of post-PCI stroke as well as in-hospital complications, death, and cost of post-PCI strokes, using the National-Inpatient-Sample. There were 8,753,574 weighted hospitalizations for PCI. Among these, those complicated with ischemic stroke were 49,097 (0.56%) in total. Worse on-hospital mortality and major complications were seen in women vs men among patients with post-PCI stroke. Men and women who had a stroke following ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, exhibited similar post-PCI mortality following propensity-score matching, however, higher post-PCI mortality was seen in women who had a stroke following PCI for unstable angina/stable ischemic heart disease. Irrespective of the PCI indication, more probability to suffer post-PCI stroke was observed in women vs men. Higher adjusted rates of vascular complications and blood transfusion were also seen in women among those with post-PCI strokes.
