Incidence and mortality of multiple myeloma in China, 2006–2016: An analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016
Journal of Hematology & Oncology Dec 18, 2019
Liu J, Liu W, Mi L, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the burden of multiple myeloma (MM) at national and provincial level in China via following the general analytical strategy used in Global Burden of Disease 2016, the age-, gender-, and province-specific incidence and mortality. As per estimates, 16,500 new cases and 10,300 deaths of multiple myeloma were reported in China in 2016. The age-standardized incidence rates and mortality rates per 100,000 population were 1.03 and 0.67, respectively. Relative to females, males had higher incidence and mortality rates in all age groups. With age, they observed an upward trend in incidence and mortality. The developed provinces showed the clustering of higher incidence and mortality rates. From 2006 to 2016, a significant increase in the incidence of MM in China was noted, while there was an increase in the mortality from 2006 to 2014, which remained stable from 2014 to 2016. These findings suggest the necessity of tailored disease prevention and control strategies at both national and provincial levels.
