Incidence and morbidity of radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in prostate cancer
Urology Jun 15, 2019
Martin SE, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the accuracy of the reported incidence rates of hemorrhagic cystitis after radiation therapy for prostate cancer in order to examine how different radiation modalities influence the development of hemorrhagic cystitis and to assess its morbidity and treatment. At two Detroit Medical Center hospitals, they performed a retrospective chart review of 709 patients who underwent radiation therapy for prostate cancer between January 2000 and September 2015. Hemorrhagic cystitis after radiation for prostate cancer was noted in 11.1%, indicating under-reporting of its incidence in the literature. They noted high morbidity and complications for patients, requiring multiple hospitalizations, blood transfusions, and procedures, in correlation to hemorrhagic cystitis. No significant reduction in the risk of developing hemorrhagic cystitis was noted with advances in radiation.
