Incidence and management of glaucoma or glaucoma suspect in the first year after pediatric lensectomy
JAMA Ophthalmology Dec 05, 2019
Freedman SF, Kraker RT, Repka MX, et al. - Among 702 pediatric patients (970 eyes) before 13 years of age, researchers evaluated the incidence of glaucoma and glaucoma suspect and reported its management in the first year following lensectomy. Patient data were reviewed and using standardized criteria glaucoma and glaucoma suspect were diagnosed by investigators. Between June 2017 and August 2019, statistical analysis was performed. According to findings, glaucoma or glaucoma suspect developed within 1 year after unilateral or bilateral lensectomy in 66 of 970 eyes (adjusted overall incidence risk, 6.3%). The authors discovered that in the first year after lensectomy glaucoma or glaucoma suspect developed in a small number of eyes and can be related to lensectomy with aphakia and younger age. Frequent monitoring for signs of glaucoma following lensectomy is warranted, particularly in children with aphakia after lensectomy and in infants 3 months or younger at lensectomy.
