Incidence and long-term outcomes of surgically treated childhood hepatic malignancies in Finland
Acta Pediatrica Jul 31, 2019
Tiusanen T, Hukkinen M, Leskinen O, et al. - During 1987-2017, researchers analyzed pediatric liver malignancies in terms of incidence, treatment, and outcomes in Finland. For this investigation, they reviewed records and national cancer registry data of 47 children with liver malignancies. With the Kaplan-Meier method, survival was gauged. Liver malignancy incidence stayed stable at 1.1:106 during follow up. Recurrent/residual disease linked to reduced five-year survival in hepatocellular carcinoma. Five-year survival was reduced in hepatoblastoma patients aged ≥2.4 years, with PRETreatment EXTent of disease IV (PRETEXT), and with recurrent disease. Findings revealed that there were encouraging results for PRETEXT I-III hepatoblastoma and un-metastasized hepatocellular carcinoma. Mortality was significantly impacted by chemotherapy adverse effects.
