Incidence and impact of sepsis on long-term outcomes after subarachnoid hemorrhage: A prospective observational study
Annals of Intensive Care Aug 29, 2019
Gonçalves B, Kurtz P, Turon R, et al. - In this study including 149 patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), researchers assessed sepsis incidence—diagnosed prospectively with the Sepsis-3 criteria— as well as its influence on mortality and functional outcomes. An independent association of death or functional dependence at hospital discharge with sepsis was revealed in multivariable logistic regression analysis, even after controlling for World Federation of Neurological Surgeons Scale, hydrocephalus and delayed cerebral ischemia. Septic patients and nonseptic patients had a mortality rate of 52.5% and 16%, respectively. Findings highlighted a significant role of sepsis on SAH outcomes as it influences both mortality and long-term functional outcomes of these patients. An effective attenuation in secondary brain injury and improvement in patients’ outcomes post-SAH may be achieved by integrating high-level neurocritical care management of neurological complications and the optimal diagnosis and management of sepsis.
