Incidence and contributing factors for uterine rupture in patients undergoing second trimester termination of pregnancy in a large tertiary hospital - A 10-year case series
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology May 29, 2018
Choon KDS, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain the incidence and contributing factors for uterine rupture in women undergoing termination of pregnancy (TOP) in Singapore. They reviewed 3,385 women who had TOP between 14+0 weeks to 23+6 weeks gestation from January 2005 to December 2014 in a large tertiary hospital and identified 339 patients with a scarred uterus. In patients with scarred uterus, the incidence of uterine rupture was 2.1% (7/339). Thus they recommend practicing caution while performing second trimester TOP on scarred uterus regarding the usage of abortifacient with minimal cumulative dosage. Second trimester TOP is recommended to be carried out in early second trimester gestation whenever feasible. Findings suggested prostaglandin analogues as safe for TOP in unscarred uteruses.
