Incidence and characteristics of thick second primary melanomas. A study of the German Central Malignant Melanoma Registry
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Aug 03, 2018
Gassenmaier M, et al. - Researchers gauged the effect of the impact of follow-up examinations on the incidence of thick second primary melanomas (SPMs) and evaluated their clinic-pathologic characteristics. A highly efficient detection of early-stage melanomas and reduction of thick melanomas were enabled by regular total body skin examinations vs first primary melanomas. Findings suggested a rare occurrence of fast-growing melanomas without an opportunity of early detection and the stable incidence of thick melanomas cannot be explained. In patient groups that are at high-risk for first or multiple primary melanomas, the importance of close-meshed total body skin examinations was highlighted.
