Incidence and causes of in-hospital outcomes and 30-day readmissions after percutaneous left atrial appendage closure: A United States nationwide retrospective cohort study using claims data

Heart Rhythm Sep 25, 2019

Vuddanda VLK, Turagam MK, Umale NA, et al. - Researchers used 2016 claims data to determine the nationwide incidence of in-hospital outcomes and 30-day readmission after percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (p-LAAC) for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients ineligible for long-term anticoagulation in the United States, using the National Inpatient Sample for In-hospital outcomes and Nationwide Readmissions Data. They selected hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of AF and p-LAAC procedure and compared endocardial and epicardial cohorts for the abovementioned outcomes. They found lower complications and 30-day readmissions but higher hospitalization costs associated with endocardial LAAC. Although higher complications were reported in relation to epicardial LAAC, a requirement for more contemporary data to compare these outcomes was realized because of the recent improvements in epicardial LAAC's technique and a significant decrease in pericardial complications shown by postprocedural care.
