Incidence and associated predictors of adverse pregnancy outcomes of maternal syphilis in China, 2016‐2019: A cox regression analysis
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Oct 09, 2020
Li Z, Wang Q, Qiao Y, et al. - Via performing cox regression analysis, researchers sought to determine the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) among pregnant women infected with syphilis and their associated predictors. Among pregnant women who were diagnosed with syphilis during the index pregnancy and delivered at gestational age ≥ 28 weeks between 2016 and 2019, syphilis treatment data were available from 83.86%. APOs occurred in 13.33% including deliveries from the total study population. Cox regression suggested a higher likelihood of APO occurrence in women tested and diagnosed in the late trimester, delivery, or postpartum. The risk of APOs was less among women who received non‐standardized treatment and who accepted standardized treatment. Findings suggest that despite huge progress in the Prevention of Mother‐to‐Child Transmission (PMTCT) of syphilis in China over the last decades, the incidence of APOs remains high among pregnant women infected with syphilis. In view of these findings, researchers emphasize the essentiality of further strengthening the access to early detection and standardized treatment of infected women to decrease the risk of APOs.
